For years there's been memes about Robert Smalls saying “This should be a movie!” Now you can be a part of making it happen -- not by donating money to support a movie, but by investing in the company trying to make it.

BILL DUKE

Legendary director/actor Bill Duke’s prolific career has touched all aspects of the entertainment industry. Just a few of his noteworthy credits as a director of film and television include Falcon Crest, Fame, Hill Street Blues and Dallas, as well as Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit (1993) and Get Rich or Die Trying (2005). Duke can also be seen in front of the camera in both features and TV, including  Predator (1987), Commando (1985), and the CW’s Black Lightning. Bill has been a member of the Legion M Advisory board since 2019.

MARVIN JONES III

Actor and rapper Marvin Jones (aka KRONDON) is known for his portrayal of “Tobias Whale” on the CW’s Black Lightning, as well as his other credits including Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse and Harry’s Law. We're thrilled to welcome Marvin to the Legion M Advisory board!

With over 500 films under their belts and 150 awards (including 2 oscars and 50 Emmy’s) the Wolper Organization is world-renowned for it’s incredible TV works like Roots and feature films like Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971) and LA Confidential (1997).

Prolific 13 year writing career spans both features and TV. His credits include two classic films for Walt Disney Feature Animation, the Academy Award nominated The Princess and the Frog and Treasure Planet. He has also written projects for Showtime, Sony, Mofac, and Marvel Studios, consulted on Tangled, Wreck-It Ralph, and Frozen, and written/produced for iconic television shows including The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Full House, and In Living Color.

An engaged business and community leader who was named to Charleston Business Magazine’s "50 Most Influential" list. Considered to be an innovative thought leader on diversity and inclusion, African American history and social justice, Michael is an accomplished author and also the Founding President/CEO of the International African American Museum. Michael has given numerous lectures, inspiring thousands of people with the Robert Smalls story, making him the most notable and credible spokesperson for the family. His TEDx Talk “The Audacity of Robert Smalls” is a must watch.

THE GRAPHIC NOVEL

The story of Robert Smalls is barely able to fit into one lifetime, let alone one feature film — so to start, we’re producing a graphic novel to expand on the narrative. We’ve enlisted the talents of artist Renzo to render Smalls' incredible deeds in stark relief. Check out a sneak peek at some of the first panels!

Defiant team-member Micheal Boulware Moore is one of the foremost authorities on the life of his great-great grandfather Robert Smalls.

LEGION M IS TURNING THE REMARKABLE TRUE STORY OF ROBERT SMALLS INTO A FEATURE FILM

THE STORY

If you’ve been following Legion M you know that this is one of our biggest projects in development.  It’s a bold and ambitious take on a bold and ambitious (and entirely true!) story. We’ve been talking with folks about this project for years now, and we know from the overwhelming response that it’s a story people want to see on the big screen. We’re doing everything we can to make that happen.

The incredible story of Robert Smalls is one that deserves to be told - and remembered.

During the height of the Civil War, Smalls, an enslaved harbor pilot in Charleston, pulled off one of the most daring heists in history - stealing a Confederate warship and sailing it past the naval blockade to freedom!

Not only did his actions help convince President Abraham Lincoln to accept African American soldiers into the Union Army, but Smalls eventually served as a captain in the Navy - of the very ship he had stolen!

After the war, Smalls was elected to the House of Representatives, becoming one of the first African Americans in Congress. While there, he wrote legislation for the first free and compulsory public school system in the US and so much more.

We have worked to put together a talented creative team to bring his legacy to life through this beautifully illustrated graphic novel, with an eventual goal of making a feature film or TV series. Our goal is to make a difference and bring this powerful story to the world!

Over the last few years, we've assembled an amazing team of actors, producers--even a real descendant of Captain Robert Smalls.

A thirty-year veteran of movies and television who wrote and produced shows including The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Full House, and In Living Color before writing two classic animated films for WALT DISNEY FEATURE ANIMATION, the Academy Awards, and Golden Globe nominated The Princess and The Frog, and the Academy Awards nominated Treasure Planet.

Legendary director/actor with a prolific career that has touched all aspects of the entertainment industry. Just a few of his noteworthy credits as a director of film and television include Falcon Crest, Fame, Hill Street Blues and Dallas, as well as Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit (1993) and Get Rich or Die Trying (2005). Jones recently released his impressive independent project Everything's Nothing, which features standout tracks "7 Eleven" and "Lean On Me." His other acting credits include voicing “Tombstone” in Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse and guest roles on shows like Into the Dark and Harry’s Law.

The great-great-grandson of Robert Smalls and an engaged business and community leader who was named to Charleston Business Magazine’s "50 Most Influential" list. Considered to be an innovative thought leader, Michael is an accomplished author, and also the Founding President/CEO of the International African American Museum. Michael is also currently running for Congress in district SC-01, the same district that Robert Smalls represented during his time in office.

THE GRAPHIC NOVEL

In order to get this story out to most largest audience as possible and as quickly as possible, we chose to partner with Stranger Comics and put out a graphic novel series in advance of the film. When complete, the series will consist of 3 graphic novels comprised of 4 comic books each (for a total of 12 comic books). This will form the underlying IP for the eventual film.

The graphic novel project was funded in less than one day and ended up raising more than $154 thousand dollars on Kickstarter in just 30 days!

Comic book #1, the digital version of the first installment of the graphic novel became an instant bestseller release on Amazon in the first week!

In a short span of time his artwork has become a source of inspiration to many artists in the black community. This recognition afforded him the opportunity to create album artwork for MARVEL’S “BLACK PANTHER: THE ALBUM”, produced by Kendrick Lamar.

In the comic book industry for almost twenty years working on properties like X-Men: Blue, Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, Spider-Man, and various other projects for Marvel including storyboards for the Guardians of the Galaxy Animated Series. He was part of the team that was nominated for the 33rd Annual GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Comic Book with their work on Star Wars: Doctor Aphra.

Founder of Stranger Comics and creator of the Asunda universe. Jones co-authored “Niobe” with Amandla Stenberg, the first nationally distributed comic with a black female author, artist, and lead character. Recently, Jones signed a deal with HBO to adapt the Asunda universe as a TV series.
